Brisbane Lions AFL visit

Children with players

On Monday 19 of February, Branyan Road State School was lucky enough to be one of the schools to be visited by some of the current Brisbane Lions players and emerging talent of the current 2018 squad.

The Brisbane Lions sent three members of their squad and a development coach to our school as part of a promotional visit to our area. Due to our success last year of the Boys and Girls AFL Gala Day teams it was a great opportunity for our grade 5 and 6 boys and girls to once again showcase their sporting skills in front of some big name identities. Some of these names included Matthew Eagles, Hugh McCluggage and Darcy Gardiner who are going to be future stars for the Lions in 2018 with most of them already playing between five and eighteen games in the AFL last year.

The concept of the morning day was for students to enjoy an AFL experience with the players playing fun games whilst learning some new skills. The current boys AFL team I am working with got to play a game and work with Coach Zane Littlejohn as well.

At the conclusion of morning tea the whole school got to see the players involved in a kicking competition against two of our own stars – 'Nullah and Annabella'. With scores tied at 13-13 it was up to Mr Fitzgerald to try and kick the winning goal (boots, tie, pants and all) in which he did in front of the 400 plus very vocal, excited and relieved home crowd. The players took the loss well by signing some footballs and a jersey for the school to keep.

A big thank you must go out to Mr Shaun Stone for organising the visit. We were one of only six primary schools in Bundaberg to receive a visit from the Lions. The success of our Auskick programs in Term 4 and support of AFL is definitely being rewarded.
