Our school is proud of the manner in which we respond to children who require extra support to learn more effectively. Our Student Support Committee meets every fortnight to discuss referrals and to devise strategies that ensure that our resources are used effectively and are not duplicated.

Discussions are minuted on a data base which teachers have access to so that they are kept well informed about the progress of any referrals and our response to them.

Our Student Support Committee is comprised of the Principal, the Special Education Programs Teacher (SEP) the Support Teacher Literacy and Numeracy, the Guidance Officer, the Chaplain and the Head of Curriculum (HOC). Each member is able to bring referrals to the meetings for discussion and depending on the needs of the child, one or more of these members will be assigned to progress the referral and respond to the identified needs. Support can be provided in several ways:

  • referral on to external agencies such as Bush Children’s
  • advocacy on behalf of the student with Paediatricians and other specialists
  • testing and data analysis
  • psychological and cognitive assessment
  • counselling and social support programs
  • targeted direct intervention in classrooms
  • teacher Aide assistance
  • specialised tuition programs
  • referral to forums such as Child and Youth Mental Health Forum
  • differentiated curriculum development
  • individual or small group intervention programs
  • student Behaviour Plan development.

All learning concerns should first be discussed with the child’s teacher whose responsibility it is to then make referral to the Student Support Committee.
